Start with arriving and leaving
The scenes you use twice a day are the ones that pay back. Arriving: the car is recognised, the gate opens, the driveway lights come on, the garage opens, the alarm disarms, the hall lights come on. Leaving: everything locks, arms and switches off on one tap or on the last credential out. Get these two right and the house already feels different.
Then lighting
Scenes for evening, movie and bedtime, and occupancy sensing in hallways, garages and outdoor areas. Lighting is cheap to automate on existing wiring and is used every day.
Then climate and energy
Heating and cooling on a schedule that matches your week rather than a timer, blinds that shade before the afternoon sun, hot water and EV charging shifted to off-peak rates. Energy monitoring shows you the saving and finds the appliance quietly costing you.
What is usually not worth it
Voice-controlled everything, smart fridges, and any device that only works through its own app. If it cannot be part of a scene with your security and lighting, it is a remote control, not automation.
Why integration with security matters
The best automation triggers are security events. A recognised vehicle, a credential at the door, an alarm arming. When automation and security are one platform, the scenes write themselves and one support team looks after all of it.
New build, renovation, or existing house
In a new build or a major renovation, plan the automation with the electrical design. Neutral wires at every switch, a small cupboard for the controller and network, cabling to the gate and the garage, and a camera position at the driveway cost almost nothing while the walls are open and a great deal afterwards.
In an existing house, most of what matters can be done with smart switches on the existing wiring, wireless sensors and a controller in the network cupboard. Gates and driveway cameras usually need a cable run, which is the one part worth having a professional do properly the first time.
What to ask an installer
- Will it work when the internet is down?
- Is it one app for security, lighting, gate and climate, or several?
- Can a scene be triggered by the camera recognising my car, or only by a button?
- Who supports it, and do they support the cameras and alarm as well?
- What happens to the system if the installer goes out of business?
